Another Film from Apatow/Feig?

In Film News on June 15, 2011 at 6:20 pm

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Universal has signed the Feig/Apatow team on to make another comedy (“Bridesmaids” is still raking it in), this one reportedly starring Jon Hamm and Melissa McCarthy.

Melissa McCarthy?  While she may not yet be a household name, she’s fast getting there; she was the brash, foul-mouthed showstopper in “Bridesmaids,” who spent the whole film chewing up the scenery with a gusto that the rest of the cast couldn’t keep up with.

Hamm had a bit part in “Bridesmaids” as well (as the horrid boyfriend of star Kristen Wiig), but he is best known for his career-making role as Don Draper on the AMC series “Mad Men.”  If this project comes to fruition, it’ll be a joy to watch both of them flex their comedy muscles in the same frame.

Trollhunter Already Slated for US Remake

In Film News on June 10, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Well, that was inevitable.  Only a few months after its US premiere at Sundance, Andre Ovredal’s Norwegian creature feature Trollhunter (reviewed here!) has been snapped up by Chris Columbus’ 1492 Pictures for an American remake.

Deadine Hollywood reports that Columbus will act as producer for the film, and that a couple of the original film’s producers will also be involved.  Columbus was quoted by Deadline as saying, “Troll Hunter was a visceral, thrilling, cinematic rock and roller coaster ride of a movie. Visually, there are scenes in this film that American audiences have never seen. We want to introduce an international audience to this amazing moviegoing experience.”

As Film School Rejects points out, the international audience could simply, you know, go and see Trollhunter now rather than waiting for an American remake.  But of course the real goal here is to lift some awesome material, increase the budget by about 500%, mount a multi-media promo campaign, and cash in big time.  Hell, if people love watching vampires so much, what’s not to like about trolls?  Stay tuned for casting news…

Aronofsky to Direct Noah’s Ark Pic?

In Film News on June 9, 2011 at 12:26 pm

Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Darren Aronofsky, most recently of “Black Swan,” is apparently trying to get an “edgy” retelling of the Noah’s Ark story off the ground.

Aronofsky penned the script himself (though it’s being rewritten by someone else), and according to Finke he’s “passionate” about the project and eager to make the film on as “grand” a scale as possible.  He is reportedly seeking a $130 million budget, over ten times what was spent on the phenomenally successful “Black Swan.”  Studios possibly interested include Paramount, Fox, and Summit Entertainment.

After pulling out of directing “The Wolverine” and also backing away from a remake of “Exodus,” Aronofsky is clearly in a mood to be in complete control, and to do something truly epic.  Does this turn towards the Biblical mark a new direction for him, or a return to the over-the-top filmmaking of “The Fountain”?  Only time and Hollywood wheeling and dealing will tell.
